Kairos Blanket Exercise Reflection

Grade 9 — Learning about reconciliation and social responsibility

The Kairos Blanket Exercise was a powerful experience that helped me see Indigenous history in a more personal and emotional way. Instead of just reading facts, we acted out the history by standing on the blankets that represented the land and moving or stepping off as different events were read. As the exercise went on, fewer people were left on the blankets, and that visual really showed how colonization, disease, residential schools, and laws deeply impacted Indigenous Peoples. It made the history feel real instead of distant.

This exercise changed how I think about Social Awareness & Responsibility. I now understand more clearly that reconciliation is not just a word; it is about listening, learning, and respecting Indigenous voices and experiences. It also reminded me that the land we live on has a long history that doesn't start with us. Even when I'm out riding or spending time outside, I think more about whose land I'm on and the history behind it, not just the trail or road in front of me. Going forward, I want to be more mindful of Indigenous perspectives in what I read, watch, and learn in school, and to show respect through my words and actions.
